Season 1 Episode 36: Conversations on Conflict

By Chey Cheney

Chey and Pav, two experienced middle school teachers from the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada, take listeners through the in’s and out’s of the field of Teaching, Learning and Leadership. Through their anecdotal, yet often comedic banter, laced with caring insightfulness, they take their audience into a conversation that is surely eye-opening and entertaining, while tackling some of the real, and ever-changing issues that exist in Education.

In Episode 36 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav recap the chat conversation that was hosted by Education Never DIes on Twitter a few days prior. They use the chat as a way to work a little deeper into the topic of what conflict truly is. Chey and Pav discuss the fact that conflict resolution among educators can only be attempted when the school culture and relationship building has occurred and a safe space has been set up. They also discuss the necessity of the sometimes difficult dialogue that needs to happen in order to be able to attempt to resolve conflicts. The culture of the conflict itself is also discussed. We don’t want conflict to disappear – conflict is indeed necessary in order to help us grow as an organization. Differing perspectives help us to develop a greater sense of how we are attempting to reach our goals, or work towards our vision and mission statement.
Chey and Pav talk about how good leadership plays a big role in ensuring that all voices of of the staff are being heard when there are conflicts that need to be resolved, or problems that need solving.
Chey and Pav introduce Clarissa Dovalina, a Writing Instructional Specialist from San Antonio, Texas for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Clarissa talks about the importance of feedback during distance learning, as opposed to numerical grades. After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their reflections and takeaways about conflict. They discuss the necessity for a positive and safe environment and culture within the order to have courageous conversations. They talk about giving every party member voice during conflict.
