Episode 34: Perseverance and Resilience during Distance Learning

By Chey Cheney

Chey and Pav, two experienced middle school teachers from the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario, Canada, take listeners through the in’s and out’s of the field of Teaching, Learning and Leadership. Through their anecdotal, yet often comedic banter, laced with caring insightfulness, they take their audience into a conversation that is surely eye-opening and entertaining, while tackling some of the real, and ever-changing issues that exist in Education.

In Episode 34 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the importance of Perseverance and Resilience during this time of Distance Learning. Teachers must work towards resiliency as they climb up out of the valleys of the remote learning lows. The battle to thrive with regards to learning new technology to help assist students, as well as tackling social emotional needs has been a great challenge for so many educators. Teachers have also been struggling with being able to get feedback from students in order to drive their instruction. With all of these obstacles and challenges it has been very hard for educators to thrive in this new learning environment.
The Dynamic Duo talks about such hurdles such as Anxiety, loneliness and even dealing with sick family members during this time when so many people around them might be dying. These issues can be difficult for teachers to cope with.
Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Amy Valentine, from Castle Rock, Colorado, who talks about Future of Schools and Increased access for teachers and students for innovative practices. Future of Schools offers scholarships for students and grants for teachers to be able to empower them to embrace new challenges within education!
After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav discuss some of the strategies and ways to be able to persevere with so many of the challenges they have encountered. Having a support team, keeping a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset, and SMART goal setting are some of the ways that teachers can fight the hurdles that they may encounter. It’s much easier to persevere when there are some of these basic strategies being met.
Remember to Inspire, Don’t Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.
