Innovative approaches for connecting research and practice in education

Public Education, Public Scholarship and Public Good

Public education in Canada and all around the world is under threat.  Economic forces are placing tremendous pressure on governments and, as a result, public institutions—including education—are sitting directly in the crosshairs. For many politicians, it would be more efficient to hand public education over to the private sector and be done with it.

But we believe that education is a public good and must remain so. It’s not perfect, and it will never be perfect, but we believe that a well-funded, well-developed and accessible public education system is an essential pillar in any democratic society.

In the same way, the way we talk about that imperfection is important. In this world of increasingly polarization, we need to use the same tools that are driving us apart to bring us together in better conversations—conversations that seek greater understanding and a resolve to work together for the sake of our children and the education systems that support them.

Our Value Proposition

voicEd Radio Canada is a dynamic community of people dedicated to the research, practice and policy that supports and reaffirms a strong commitment to great quality public education in the 21st century.  We are able  to bring together a diverse set voices to foster the vibrant dialogue, debate AND action necessary for this vision to be fully realized. All in one place!

We are a future-oriented community, inspired by images of who and what we can be when we are at our best. We continue to build a public space where researchers and practitioners can meet in dynamic, vibrant conversations. Our work at voicEd Radio is committed to exploring how a new type of public scholarship that helps get education research out of the journals and the ivory towers and into the hands of those who need it the most.

We are hoping that the work we begin here will catalyze other conversations and initiatives.  That is our theory of change. That is our call to action!

New Stories—Stronger Narratives

Saying we’re committed to a strong public education system is one thing. Identifying the work that we are able to do WELL in order to realize that commitment is quite another. That’s why we’ve chosen to focus our attention on connecting current research and practice, hoping that these strengthened connections will have an impact on how education research is used in classrooms and the type of research that is undertaken in the academy. And we’re hoping that this also results in stronger, more informed education policy across Canada.

If you recognize, like we do, that our narratives about the importance of public education are becoming a little threadbare, and that our current conversations are too polarized to be really helpful, we invite you to help us weave new aspirations, new stories and new commitments into the Canadian fabric. Take a look at what we’re up to and drop us a line if you would like to be part of the conversation.

We are voicEd Radio and your voice is RIGHT here!

SUPPORTING PODCAST
DEVELOPMENT

At voicEd Radio, podcasts are our main vehicle for telling stories: stories about life in the classroom, stories about research and stories about the importance of public education. We would like to help you to tell your story. Whether you’re an educator, a student, a parent or a researcher, if you believe that your story can contribute to a deeper understanding of public education in this country, we would love to hear from you. We’ll help you bring that story to life.

You may need technical advice on recording or editing a podcast. Perhaps you need a place to host your work. You may need some insights on the podcast format that might work best for your story. You might even have insights and experience of your own to share with the community. Let us know how we can help bring your important story to life.

RESEARCH TO PRACTICE

We know that there is a divide between education research and practice. At voicEd Radio, we are committed to doing something about that. We’re not going to solve the problem completely,  but we can tell you that a large portion of our energy over the next three years will be dedicated to connecting Canada’s education research community with practitioners from the field in unique and dynamic ways. What types of research/practice conversations are going to help create a better working relationship between the academy and the schoolhouse? How might these conversations impact education policy?Let’s find out together! To help get the conversation going, be sure to check out some of Canada’s newest education researchers in our Off the Shelf series. And stay tuned for ways that you can become part of this work!

SPECIAL SERIES

Many of us appreciate the depth that a well-researched radio documentary series can provide but, you have to admit, there aren’t many of them out there that deal with public education in Canada. A core part of our work is to take some deep dives into issues and ideas of interest to the Canadian public and present them in a compelling way. Here’s a hint at what to expect in the 2022/23 season:

  • Learning to Read
  • indigenous Perspectives on Science
  • The Making of Education Policy in Canada
  • Academic Freedom
  • Imagining a Better Future for Education
